The Rockland Country Day School has long been a center for arts education in the metropolitan area. The school’s mission is to focus on the individual while developing a student’s creative expression in visual and performing arts.
The art department encourages each student to grow and develop their artistic skills. The development of perception and imagination is combined with an awareness of visual elements, principals of design, and creative vision. The theater department and student performances have won regional awards for many years. Our music department offers performance, song-writing, and recording opportunities.
Our studio art department and theater department are unparalleled. Our faculty, many of whom are working artists, challenge students in all grades to discover new creative expression while moving towards technical mastery. RCDS students are grounded in the historical underpinnings of art, music, and theater. Student creativity is sustained with concerts, art shows, songwriting showcases, and spoken-word performances.
In addition to our many concert events and art shows, we host an independent study fair in which students who have spent the school year pursuing their own course of study showcase their work.
Weekend activities for our boarding students vary by season and include trips to New York City, local biking, hiking, bowling, apple picking in the fall, ice skating in the winter, and outings to local events. Each year, residents select a locale for an out- of- state trip, to be taken with the supervision of dorm parents, during our February break.
