About the Program
Bringing forth the best in every student by knowing and educating each of them as an individual.HistoryFounded in 1959, Rockland Country Day School (RCDS) was established by a group of community leaders led by Professor Charles Frankel of Columbia University, first president of the RCDS Board of Trustees. Throughout its history, the school has emphasized students’ learning-by-doing, and providing a personalized education to all students.
Located in Congers, New York, the school offers a true Country Day environment with easy access to a big city (New York). The 20-acre campus is used as a living laboratory and the daily structure and residential dorm have all of the advantages of a distraction-free study environment.

Jocelyn Feuerstein, is the Head of School, beginning July 1, 2018. She has been the Dean of Students and Residential Life at RCDS for 7 years, which includes programming, activities and discipline for all RCDS students. In her role as Head of School, she is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the entire school, its employees and all students. She has more than 10 years of experience in developing out-of-classroom programs for students, along with many years of marketing and outreach experience in the publishing world. She holds a BS in Business Administration from New York University.
Joy Tan teaches Math in the Children’s School, Singapore Math, and Mandarin in our Upper School. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Nanyang Technical University, a BA from National University of Singapore, and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as extensive experience teaching math and science.
Michele Sommer has been the Art Department Chair and taught at RCDS for 20 years. Ms. Sommer earned a BA in French from Bowling Green State University, an MFA from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, and an MS Ed. from the Bank Street College of Education. She has taught art and French for more than 20 years, and joined RCDS in 1998.
Kennon Landis has been the STEAM, computer science, and math instructor for several years and has won awards from the Rockland Community Foundation and the New York State Dept. of Education, including funding for his work with RCDS students. He is an alumnus of the prestigious Grinnell College and holds an MS in Teaching from Fordham University.
Sebastian Stan – Class of 2001 – The star of movies including Captain America, as well as having appeared on TV shows including Once Upon a Time, Kings, and Gossip Girl.
Lea Michelle – The star of Glee, for her portrayal of Rachel Berry; she attended Rockland Country Day for elementary school.
