Soccer
Overview
Soccer at RCDS is a varsity coed sport. The team can be large in size, however everyone is encouraged to play in games and players substitute regularly. The fall soccer season usually ranges from the second week of school to the last week of October, and we compete against other high school teams from the area that have similar numbers and athletic programs. Most teams we compete against are also coed. Practices are four days a week until 5:00 p.m. and Fridays are offered as optional practice days for those players that either need extra work or want another day of training. Playing on the team is open to all students 8th grade and up.
Successful Season for RCDS Soccer Team (2009)
By Timothy Bidon
The Rockland Country Day School’s varsity soccer team had one of its most successful sports seasons to date. The squad made it through the entire high performance season with only one defeat and with every player getting a chance to perform on the field.
The team’s first away game of the year was against Community. For some teams, this may have been intimidating, but the Cougars overcame it, leaving the other team in the dust by scoring 7-1. The Cougars kept their lucky streak going by defeating Barnstable in a home game, which resulted in 3-0. They later beat Community yet again, winning by a safe 5-0.
Later in the season, RCDS met what was considered the toughest team and most challenging game of the season. The Cougars marched bravely onto the soggy soccer field at Green Meadow, playing neck and neck against their opponents. They finished that game one point ahead, with a final score of 3-2.
Their next game was the only upset of the season when the Cougars suffered their first and only defeat this year against Barnstable, losing by a slim margin, 2-1. The final game against Green Meadow was a roaring success, green hair and all, with RCDS finishing off the season by winning the home game 3-1. The team prevailed despite sickness and injury (both earlier in the week and in-game) in its most thrilling win of the season.
The team was comprised of almost 30 students, from grades 8 through 12. This year’s team consists of Carly Avezzano, Cedric Bluman, Gabby Bradley, Danielle Cacioppo, Marc Cohen, Brigid Crispi, Maeve Crispi, Uriel Eisen, Derek Frelow, Angela Halton, Dong Jae Han, Nathan Hasz, Cheol Hwa Jin, Jisu Jung, Dong Gun Kim, Yun Soo Kim, Soo Min Kim, Jay Lee, Yeong Ung Lee, Jake Miller, Elvis Mullen, Tae Hee Park, Casey Patari, Nathan Paul, Maryn Paul, Chemdiya Reed, Nicky Rocco, Nikolai Stern, and Haley Tokarski.
