Students who are not applying to a conservatory (visual or performing) arts program may still present a portfolio to a liberal arts school if they have strong materials that will give additional depth and breadth to their overall admission portfolio.

Such a portfolio might include slides or digital images of visual art work, videos of dance, musical or drama performances, samples of creative or journalistic writing, diagrams of design work done for theatrical performances or samples of any other significant work that you might have undertaken.

Many schools have a specific format that they wish applicants to follow when submitting an arts portfolio. If the school is one of the Common Application members, be sure to check the requirements for an Arts Supplement on the Common Application.

RCDS has created a sample Arts Supplement that follows the guidelines of most schools. You will probably be able to use that.

Specifications for Submitting Materials

In addition to filling out and attaching this form to your submission(s), please clearly present a label on your CD / slides / DVD / video with your full name and details about each of your submissions.

For example:

Additional Specifications for Theater and Debate

If you wish to submit examples of your experience in theater or debate, please send a resume and/or a labeled DVD, CD or video highlighting a sample or samples that are no more than ten minutes long.

Additional Specifications for Dance

If you wish to submit a DVD or video of your performance or choreography please clearly identify yourself. If you plan to submit a resume as well, it should also indicate what styles of dance you are most familiar with now (e.g., mod­ern, jazz, ballet, hip hop, ballroom, clogging) and whether you are interested in pursuing choreography or production of dance.

Additional Specifications for Artwork: If you wish to submit samples of artwork, please follow these guidelines. Material not submitted in this format may not be reviewed.

• Please submit no more than 10 different images of work completed within the last two years. These images may be submitted either as slides or as digital files.

• If slide portfolios are submitted, they should be placed in a clear slide sheet.

• Digital submissions should be sent on CD with images saved in JPEG file format, with the widest dimension not to exceed 1800 pixels or approximately 360 ppi at 5 inches wide.

Additional Specifications for Music: If you wish to submit examples of your work in music, please send a DVD, CD or video of different works, each recorded in one take. The whole recording should last no more than ten minutes and should highlight you as a performer or composer (or both). Composers are also encouraged to send a written score in addition to, or instead of, a recording.

In order to be reviewed, all supplemental material must be submitted by the appropriate application deadline. Generally speaking, you should send only copies, since most colleges cannot return the art work to you. But if they say they can return your work, be sure to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope so they can do so.
